Things to consider before buying a baby stroller.

Before choosing your stroller there are number of things to consider. Besides the two most important factors such as safety and functionality, you'll have to ask yourself if the type of stroller you'll be buying fits your lifestyle.

For example, if you're the type of person that likes to be outdoor a lot you may want to consider buying a jogging stroller. But if you're always on the run or driving around town doing errands, then a lightweight/compact stroller would be a better fit.

Your Baby's safety should always be your first priority when deciding on the right stroller.  Here are a few safety features to look for.

5 Point Harness
To ensure your baby is secure in the stroller always choose a 5 point harness. This harness goes around the baby’s waist, over both shouders, and between his legs.  This will ensure they are secure and won't accidentally wiggle out of the stroller.  This is especially important if you decide on buying a travel system stroller since it will double as a car seat.

Brakes
This may seem obvious but make sure your stroller has a good breaking system.  The last thing you want is for your stroller to roll away when park on an incline.  If the stroller comes with hand brakes, you should thoroughly test that as well.

Weight limit
Check the weight limit of the stroller because this will greatly effect the stability of the stroller.  If you have a bigger or older child check on the manufacturer weight limit of the stroller.  This will prevent any injuries from accidental tipping of the stroller.  This is especially true when hanging bags on the handles of the stroller.  It's not recommended to do so, but if you have a light weight stroller it's more likely to tip over than a standard stroller.

Safety Strap
If you plan on getting a jogging stroller make sure it comes with a leash or safety strap.  The last thing you want is a runaway stroller.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself which will guide you thru this important decision making process.

How many children do you have or plan to have?

You’ll need to ask yourself this when deciding on a single or double stroller. For a lot of new parents it may seem obvious to buy a single stroller initially but if you’re on a budget and plan to have more then one child that are close in age, it’ll make more sense to buy a double stroller.

I’m on a budget and I don’t want to buy an expensive stroller.

When deciding on a stroller you’ll have to consider both price and quality. This is especially true if you plan on have more kids in the future. It might be better to buy something that’s more expensive and of higher quality which will last longer for the next bundle of joy.

You can initially use a “snap-n-go” stroller such as the Kolcraft Universal if your baby is under 6 months old. If your child is over 6 months old then you may want to consider a Maclaren Volo or Graco MetroLite.

What is the age of the child?

This will help you decide whether an infant or toddler stroller is right for you.

Are you a tall parent?

You may want to consider the Maclaren Techno XLR which stands at 44” compare to typical strollers which are 40” or 42”. Another good choice would be a Baby Jogger City Mini, Zoopa Hupla or Bumbleride. The Zoopa handle height is 42” and the Bumbleride has an adjustable handle up to 45”.

What’s the right type of stroller?

This will depend largely on you. Picking a stroller is not as simple as picking a single, double, or triple stroller. You have many options to choose from which will be narrow down base on your life style. Here’s a list of types you should consider.

Standard Strollers
Everyone is familiar with this one since it offers more features then other strollers. For example, this type is usually more comfortable, heavier, and offers features such as a bigger storage area.

Multi-Child Strollers
Parents have a choice of single, double, or even triple strollers.

Compact/Lightweight Strollers
This type is design for those of you who plan on running a lot of errands or going on very short trips and don’t want the hassle of carrying a heavier stroller. Some of the benefits it offers is convenience, weighs less then 18 lbs, and folds very easily. The disadvantage is it offers basic features, less storage area, and is not as comfortable as the standard stroller.

Jogging / All Terrain Strollers
If you enjoy doing a lot of outdoor activities you may want to consider this stroller. Most models have 3 large wheels. This will provide your child with a smooth ride in almost all terrains. They have all the same features and benefits as a standard stroller. The only disadvantage it has is because of its longer and larger size it cannot be folded as compactly.

Travel System Strollers
This stroller provides the convenience of a car seat and stroller in one. You can use it as a stroller and then detach the seat and move your child to your car with minimal disturbance.
